Superstructure - Symbols and hatching
Graphical detailing work above damp proof course (d p c) level is conveyed by designers using elevations, plans and sections. The drawings will be to scale but also need to display the dimensions for key features and details. Hatching and symbols recommended in B S 1192 enable information to be conveyed to the design and construction team without a mass of specification notes.

The picture showing a window in elevation is a very good example of this, with the directional arrows pointing to the hinges on the opening lights of casement window. The pane of glass with no arrow indicating a hinge position confirms that this is a fixed pane (not opening).
An elevation of a window as recommended in B S 1192.
Symbol for a casement window with two opening lights and one fixed pane.
